I received my Texas License to Carry a Handgun permit this week. In Texas we have an open carry law. Most people still choose the concealed carry I would imagine. So I needed to go get a nice pistol to carry around. I had spent many months looking and finally decided on the Sig Sauer P938 in 9mm which I picked up Wednesday.

Today I got a chance to head out to the range and do some shooting. It is a nice gun. This is the smallest pistol I have ever used. The sight radius is only 4 inches. My hands aren't large, but the small frame takes some getting used to. Being new and out of the box, the trigger was a little off. A new gun needs to be broken in. One of the biggest problems was that it was nearly impossible to load the magazines because the spring was very stiff. I found a very good speed loader, the UpLula. I was able to snarf one up at Academy before heading to the range. It is very easy to use.

I need a lot of practice. Each pistol is different and it takes some effort to master them. It is fun. I found that I was flinching terribly at first. That threw the rounds off the target. Additionally, the trigger has a sharp spot that hurt my trigger finger. I covered the finger with a band aid, and things were much better. Later on in the day when I got home I filed the sharp corners off the trigger which will be just fine in the future.

In the end I shot about 150 rounds in this first outing. Once I had figured things out with paper targets, I headed over to the steel plates and had a blast, so to speak. I like shooting steel more than paper targets. The steel plates are about 6 inches in diameter and fall over when hit. There is a rope which is pulled to set them back up. Mucho fun!
