Our only touring stop today was the National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem. It is a fairly new museum that highlights the machines used and produced in heavy industry. It is right next to the now defunct Bethlehem Steel plant. There was a large exhibit hall that contained quite a few restored machines. These had all been fixed up and painted just like new. One that caught my eye was the subject of today's photo. This is an ammonia compressor which was built in 1883. It is connected to a big steam engine. Now you may ask what is so cool about an ammonia compressor. I will tell you. Ammonia was the working fluid in early refrigeration systems. This particular one is dear to my heart. It was used in a brewery.
After our tour we headed to Staunton, Virginia for the night.
