We traveled from Bar Harbor to Portland in the morning and then commenced to do some touring. The first stop was the Wadsworth-Longfellow house where good old Henry spent his formative years. It was an interesting tour because I learned a lot about the poet. I admit to being a Neanderthal as far as poetry is concerned. I might have had to read a couple of short ones in high school, but they were obviously forgettable to me. The house was pretty much original. That made it interesting.

Next stop was the Portland Head Light which is the subject of today's photo. The background is very diffuse because a fog bank was rolling in. The little museum was interesting because it had a lot of history for this particular light as well as some general information. One thing I didn't realize was that lighthouse keeper jobs were political patronage assignments. The results of that you can imagine was less that desirable. In 1852 standards were established and keeping lighthouses was left to the professionals.
