We had a very busy day. It all started with a visit to the Vermont State House. It has been there since the Civil War. Of course, it is built with grey Vermont granite from down the road in Barre. There is also Vermont marble on the interior. We had a nice tour. There isn't very much to see because it is so small. They still have the legislature meeting there. Apparently it is the oldest capitol with the legislature still meeting in the original rooms. Although there is a dome, there is no rotunda. The only other place like that is Annapolis where there is a small rotunda but it is built into the ceiling, not under the dome. We finished off our trip to Montpelier with a visit to the Vermont State Historical Society Museum. It wasn't very interesting.

Next stop was Morse Farm Sugarworks. It is a very big maple sugar producer. Of course there was no production going on. We bought a bunch of maple syrup to bring back to friends and checked out the samples. I didn't realize there was so much variety. On a whim Ginny decided that we needed to visit a granite quarry in Barre. I was a little cranky about it since we had a four hour drive to Augusta still to do. It turned out to be interesting. A granite quarry is a very big operation with big equipment. This was a Rock of Ages quarry. They are well known for gravestones and mausoleums. Then we hit the road to Augusta which was a long drive at the end of the day. The road was good but full of curves.

Today's photo is looking into the quarry. They take the granite out in huge pieces then stack them all over the place. Each one has an inventory number and a grade painted on the side. There was nothing going on in the quarry. It would have been cool to see something operating.

Seeing a saw cut slices of granite was cool. Probably a video on YouTube.
