A week ago Monday our neighbor Francie called us while we were on the road and said water was coming out of our garage. She got the water shut off and we started making calls. Eventually we arranged to have a company come out to do water damage mitigation. A toilet on the second floor cracked and water cascaded down into the kitchen, living room, laundry room and garage. There was quite a bit of damage to the second floor as well. My first instinct was to head right back to Houston. The water mitigation guy said that we should stay on our trip and let the pros handle it. We did the latter.

We arrived back today and this is what the kitchen looked like. The water mitigation guys did a great job. We have lost a bunch of stuff, but fortunately, our photographs and other valuable things were pretty much spared from damage. Now we have a project on our hands. Looks like we are going to take the opportunity to do some significant remodeling. We have been talking about it for quite a while and this event will prove the catalyst to get it done. Fortunately, we can live in the house. Everything works.

We left the water on because friends came
by to water the plants. That was a bad
decision.

John, we always turn off the water at the main inlet when we leave the house. that minimizes damage if a toilet breaks as all you get is one bowl full. This advice a little late
