This was the first of two days in Mesa Verde National Park. We had been here last year and found it quite interesting. This year we planned a two day visit so that we could see all the available houses. There are lots of them, literally hundreds. Many aren't so big, but several are quite large. We booked four hikes that took us down into the structures. The one pictured today is Long House which is a pretty big one.
Each time I get into one of these things I marvel at the ingenuity of the builders. These guys had no metal tools, so it was rock tools they used to shape the stones. It is certainly not as elegant as the Incan structures. I would call it utilitarian. I wish there were some way to time ravel back and see what is actually going on at these places when they were inhabited by the ancient Puebloans. BTW-it is politically incorrect to call them Anasazi.
