I decided to have another go with my new camera and headed out to the airport. Not much going on there. The above pictured Army helicopter was shooting approaches and hovering so I snapped a few. I didn't have a lot of time to get set up but I did get a few decent shots. The problem is that the helo is very dark and the autoexposure was reading mostly sky. One thing I haven't messed around with very much at all in my photographic adventure is the metering mode. I always leave it on evaluative which averages the whole frame. I think partial or spot metering would have been more effective in this situation. Well, that is just one more reason to head out and take more pictures.
This is how I leave the settings for 90% of the photos I take. Setting P on the dial. Spot metering, on the assumption that usually the subject will be under the circle in the middle of the viewfinder. White balance on Auto. ISO, on a bright sunny day, 800. On a dark cloudy day, 3,000 or above. That insures a high shutter speed which keeps blur down a lot. These settings make the camera a point and shoot one with much better quality. I never use a tripod.
