This is the Mary Todd Lincoln house in downtown Lexington. Mary was the daughter of a very wealthy man and grew up with the elite in Lexington. That included Henry Clay. She lived in this house from 1832 to 1839. She moved to Springfield, Illinois and the rest is history, so to speak. We had an interesting tour. We were the only ones on it. Our guide provided a lot of commentary about the house as well as the life of Mary.

We also visited Ashland, the home of Henry Clay, the great compromiser. That was an interesting tour as well. I have to admit that the only thing I knew about him was his accolade as the great compromiser. He ran unsuccessfully for president five times, three of which he was actually the party nominee. The actual house is not his original house. That was taken down shortly after his death because it was structurally unsound. The new one was built on the existing foundation and was completed in 1857. Some of the furnishings are actual Henry Clay items. Many are items from his descendants who lived in the house. My only beef was that there was some "art" in many of the rooms. It was entitled "The Loves Of Aaron Burr: Portraits In Corsetry And Binding." It was all crap, as far as I am concerned. I hope the taxpayer didn't get stuck with the bill, but I bet we did.
