We had a nice visit to Fort Mandan today. This is the place where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804-1805. The fort structure is a recreation of the one they might have built based on information in the journals. The exact location of the actual fort is not known; nonetheless, it is very interesting to visit. You know that Corps of Discovery spent time in the area which is what counts for me. People get into Talmudic discussions about the details of the Lewis and Clark story, but I prefer to stand back from the details and just think about the strong, brave characters who were the first to cross the United States on land. Their story is compelling. They were very resourceful. We need more of those types today.

I like your slant on this. Some things people argue about aren't all that important.

Not really. Today's astronauts are in
constant communication with the ground
and have technical support up the
Wazoo. Lewis and Clark were completely
on their own for 2 1/2 years.

Today's astronauts might be considered modern-day
equivalents of Lewis and Clark.
