23-MAY-2016 Ginny

May 23, 2016

We visited Lansing, Michigan, today and went on a tour of the Capitol. We were accompanied by 30 4th graders who were very well behaved. It was a sunny day and we got some nice outside photos. It turned out that the roof of the parking garage was a good place. We rarely get a chance for photos of buildings from a high vantage point. We also went to the Michigan State Museum. It was pretty interesting. It was definitely set up as a learning experience for kids. The thing that caught my interest was this 3800 pound piece of float copper. This chunk was dredged up by the glaciers and pushed across the ground. The Keweenaw peninsula in the Upper Peninsula has very rich deposits of native copper (and silver). As a matter of fact Calumet was once a booming mining center, but the copper has run out. We ended up the day in Palatine, Illinois to spend some time with Ginny's cousins.

A lot of copper is smelted from ore.
Native copper is hard to find.

At todays scrap metal prices that lump of copper is worth £4,313.
Calumet is a top grade camera shop in London.
Anyway, that is very interesting, I had assumed copper had to be smelted from ore.
It is a sad day when I learn nothing new.

Nice one. You're learning things I never knew--or forgot. I was one of those 4th graders a long time ago.
