Last Wednesday I got a roll of color film and headed down to Galveston to see how things were with the Nikon FE2 that I am trying to resurrect. Although I had a few frames with a stuck shutter, I got 20 properly executed frames. The first thing I noticed is that every frame was overexposed by about a stop or a little less. That was ok, especially since I set all the controls right down the center. When I got the negatives into the scanner, it was obvious that they were not as sharp as I would have liked. I got to thinking about that a little bit and concluded that for me at the time when I was regularly using the camera it was just fine. That is because all we ever had made were 4X6 snapshots. At that level, it was just hunky dory (or tickety boo if you are from over there).

Now days with our software we burrow in quite far and examine things on a pixel level. I looked at some things I shot at the same time with my 5D Mk3 and the 24-105 lens. The difference is so great that even a blind baseball umpire could see the difference. I do want to continue on with my experiments. The next step is to take out our old Canon film camera which uses the Canon EF lenses and do a comparison with the 5D using the same lenses. I think this should be interesting. It will be pretty easy to do since I have two 24-105 lenses (lucky me!)

I will keep you posted. This photo is one that I scanned from the negatives I shot last week.

One more experiment.

John, it is not too late to renounce The Evil Photographic Medium.
Forgiveness awaits you.
