We are getting ready for our month long trip to Iceland. We leave Tuesday. I can't wait to get back on the road. We have been home for a whole week, and I am going stir crazy.

In preparation for the trip we decided to take along some snacks for a couple reasons. First, that is the way we do things especially when we are driving, like we will be doing in Iceland. Second, everything is expensive in Iceland, so bringing stuff from home makes sense. SO, you are wondering, how much stuff can we bring. Well, Iceland customs allows each person to bring 3 kilograms of food, as long as it has all been cooked. That is 6.6 pounds. So, we got our act together after a quick trip to Kroger and assembled the above pictured food to bring along with us. This is all stuff we like to munch on. When we are traveling, we seldom eat a full restaurant meal. That gets expensive and we tend to eat way too much. A lot of times the places we stay include a free breakfast which is always a good deal. Sometimes it isn't much more than bagels and cereal, but that works for us. One thing that we really like is Subway sandwiches. I hear you say, "YUK!" Well, let me tell you that they are really pretty good. It you get all the available toppings you end up with the equivalent of a salad and a sandwich. It is pretty tasty. We are easy to please.

I do have to say that I am looking forward to having the local cuisine in Iceland. We plan to find out where the locals go and head that way. Our son told us that it is mostly lamb or fish and root vegetables. Works for me. We will report what we find over the next month. As far as going where the locals go is concerned, I will always remember my trips to Fawley in England. I would stay in Brockenhurst and head to the Snake Catcher Pub for a nice evening meal. That was good food and great bitter. We stayed in the Balmer Lawn Hotel which was used as a meeting place for Eisenhower and Montgomery during the war. I would go back there any time. I saw my first cricket match at the Balmer Lawn and found out it was really an excuse for the spectators to eat and drink. I never figured out how the game actually works, but it was fun watching the nattily attired fans wandering to the refreshments tent where food was dispensed from a myriad of silver serving dishes. Those folks seemed to have it pretty good.
