We had a boatload of fun this morning, excuse the expression. We went on a four hour jet boat ride up the Stikine River out of Wrangel. Once again, the weather was perfect, bright sun and warm temperatures. This river is partially fed by glacier melt and part by snow melt. You can tell what part you are in by the water. Glacial water is turbid and slightly blue-green in color. Snow melt is absolutely crystal clear. Along the way we happened on to a moose which was pretty neat. He was wandering along the shore munching on willow leaves. This time of year the moose are well fed because there are willows everywhere. We were not able to get up to the glacier because of the ice, but we did spend some time floating amongst the river ice and the calved ice bergs.
We spent some time in Wrangel which has a superb museum. Unfortunately, the sailing schedule of the boat prevented a thorough investigation of the museum. |
