We visited Poplar Forest today. It was Thomas Jefferson's retreat near Forest, VA. Jefferson is the most interesting President to me. He designed this home, just as he did Monticello. The actual house and property is a lot smaller than Monticello, but you can see the design elements of the structure that he agonized over. It has been an ongoing restoration project and archaeological site for about 20 years. I personally found it rather boring in the sense that it was really a structure under renovation and therefore there were only a few period pieces of furniture inside. Additionally, I felt the docents were pretty cranky, but that's just me. Ginny didn't feel that way. When we finished we hit the road for the 7 1/2 hour drive to Alpharetta to see Peyton, Laura and Robert. |
