We spent the whole day in downtown Springfield, Illinois. I grew up in Illinois and vaguely remember a junior high school field trip down here. The weather was great. Warm and sunny. We visited Lincoln's house and the visitor center. We learned quite a bit about Lincoln, especially his life before being elected the 16th President. The visitor center had some very good movies. The house was interesting. I didn't realize this, but Lincoln was very wealthy by the time he was nominated for president. I guess lawyers are always wealthy. Nothing changes. We then went to a Frank Lloyd Wright house. The second on this road trip. Everybody on the tour oohed and aahed at every little detail. Me, I thought the place was a dark dungeon but it was interesting. Hardly any sunlight getting in there. It was lit with period light bulbs which were about 16 watts. I would have gone nuts living there. Ginny liked it, that is all that counts. Then we went to the State Capitol. Along with Harrisburg, the Springfield capitol is supposed to be one of the two most ornate capitol structures in the United States. It is impressive. There is a little tiff going on with some renovation work. Seems that cash strapped Illinois decided to spend $667,000 on three copper doors. That did not play well in Peoria. Finally we went to the Illinois State Museum. It was small and interesting. They had an interesting exhibit of the natural history of Illinois complete with some neat fossils. Then, of course, there was the obligatory "man is ruining the environment" display. Jeesh. So, it was a fun day all around. We stopped by Wal Mart to pick up some salads and returned to the hotel the the wine was waiting for us.
