We spent a fair amount of time this morning in Sioux City, Iowa. There is a very good Lewis and Clark interpretive center there. Also there is the monument to Sergeant Floyd (today's photo), the only person to die on the Lewis and Clark expedition. Floyd died just three months into the expedition. From the descriptions in the journals, it appears that he died of a ruptured appendix. That was a condition that was not treatable at the time (just over 200 years ago). Medical science has come a long way. After lunch we headed out to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For both of us it was the first time in South Dakota. That makes three new states. This was an easy day with only about 120 miles of driving. Tomorrow is a honker as we head to Wall, South Dakota.

Well, at least they were given by the ruler of Egypt, not plundered.

It is surprising how common this shape of memorial is all over the world.
There is a small one on the embankment of the Thames in London.
Called Cleopatra's Needle it is from Egypt, not sure how old it is, but it was definitely made before I was born.
Google Cleopatra's Needle for the interesting story of how it got here.
