We toured around Pensacola today. It was a nice day. After spending the morning in historic downtown Pensacola, we went out to tour Fort Barrancas which is on the grounds of the Naval Air Station. It was a very interesting tour. The ranger was very knowledgeable and told a good story. To me the interesting thing was the brick work and the engineering that went into the construction of the fort. This is a view down the scarp gallery. On the left are walls and arches which are backfilled with sand, lots of sand. The engineers of the day know about angle of repose so the wall at the left is just high enough so the sand will stay behind it. On the right is the outer wall which is not physically attached to the interior of the fort. The arching black line on the right is the joint between the interior and the wall. There is about a one inch separation. This was fun.
