Bloke is a damned genius. Our very expensive Garmin 430 GPS radios have a back up battery in them. These batteries do not last forever. A bunch of us had them finally poop out and we wanted to replace them. Well, Garmin charges hundreds of dollars to replace the battery which is a simple 3V lithium battery obtainable from Radio Shack. The problem lies in the fact that the battery in the Gamin has spot welded terminals which are soldered into the board. Bloke found out that hard way that you can't just unsolder the battery. The board is very complicated and, as Bloke found, it is multilayered. So Bloke had a brainstorm. We will pry the terminals off the old battery and solder a new battery to the old terminals. The first step is removing the old battery. Popping the little spot welds with a box knife is the first step as Bloke demonstrates in this photo. With the new battery on the board all you have to do is reassemble the case.
A special note to the Garmin design team: Thanks Guys! They designed the board where most of the screws are the same size, making reassembly much easier.
Would it be posible to solder the battery tags to some flying leads. Pass the leads out of the set to a small external battery holder. When the battery is flat, just pop a new one in the holder, a few seconds work. No more dismantling the set.
