We had a very long driving and sightseeing day. We left Bend after a leisurely breakfast with Don and Bev and headed north. We stopped at Smith Rock State Park and Peter Skene Ogden State park. These were nice quick stops. Smith Rock is well known for great rock climbing, an endeavor in which I have zero interest. We also stopped at the "ghost town" of Shaniko. That wasn't much to see. Finally, after miles of up and down and twisty roads, we got to our first objective, the Clarno Unit of John Day Fossil Beds. There was a short hike among the boulders where you could see lots of fossil vegetation in the rocks. We then headed to the Painted Hills unit and did all the short hikes there. The sun was getting lower in the sky, and we posed ourselves for this picture in from of some of the painted hills. Another hour and a half on the road took us to the town of John Day where we rolled in about 8:30 in the evening. A very long and interesting day.
