We traveled from Puno to Lima today. Along the way to the airport at Juliaca we stopped at a local Indian farm for a visit, and another opportunity to buy stuff. Everywhere you look in Peru somebody is trying to sell you stuff. Walking down the street you are constantly met by people selling everything you could ever imagine. They get some stuff from somewhere and try to peddle it to the tourists. It could be candy bars and crackers, jewelry, clothing, hats, you name it. These people are like flies. Some of them will be doing something to catch your attention. Having an infant in tow is one possibility. Sometimes it is a baby animal that is SOOO CUTE. This lady and her child were residents of the farm we visited. The whole place is set up as a tourist trap. The interesting thing to me was a display and description of the grains and potatoes they grow. This farm was at an altitude of 12500 feet. They made a big deal that they were crafts people and they had a display that would seem to indicate they were weavers. So, out came the rugs for sale. After a while, our group of 40 people bought eight of these rugs (throw rug size). Ginny and I bought none. As we got on the bus and headed toward our next stop, we got to thinking about this operation. There is no way in hell that these people could be actually making the rugs. This was a genuine tourist trap. I got to chuckling that when the day was over, these folks got into their hidden mini-van and drove back to their condo in Puno.

Anyway, this was our last full day in Peru, and it was interesting. We stopped one more place and had a look at an interesting burial site (Sillustani). I found it interesting because it was a collection of Inca and pre-Inca structures. Very interesting. In my mind, I think it would be fascinating to really study the building techniques of all the cultures that eventually became the Incan empire. It would also be nice to start a micro-brewery. I have to make up my mind one of these days. Or maybe not.
