April 24, 2010

Saturdays have evolved into a feast day here at the homestead. I have had a lot of fun with the grill Ginny got me for my birthday. Today is no exception. I got up early to start brining some really nice pork loins that are destined to be grilled this afternoon. I was using the blender and noticed that it had started to leak. Normally, this is not a problem because we have relaced the gasket in the lower housing and solved the problem in the past. Today, however, things were different. The bearing that connects the drive motor to the impeller started to leak. That signals the end of this blender. We got good service out of it - about 35 years or so.

Anyway, there is more to the story. I have told a similar one in the past with a broken laundry basket. Ginny came into the kitchen and asked what I was up to. I told her the bearing was leaking and the blender was broken. Her immediate response, "Why did you break it?" I was very tempted to reply that I was just having one of those mornings and felt the urge to destroy something, but decided that would not be a good thing. So, I carefully explained that I did not personally break it. It just broke. It was old and well used, and it was not unexpected that eventually it would give up the ghost. I mentioned that it would be a good time to get a new one. Of course, her reply was that she will find one at a garage sale. Today is the massive neighborhood garage sale, so we will see what she finds. It might be another 35 year old one that has a leaky agitator bearing, who knows?

Too bad about the bearing---the glass portion of the appliance was made to last.

Not to worry. Ginny can sell this one on Ebay.

Don't suggest she looks for one in a thrift store John. Once in one they will never leave without a major buy.
