I am just about at my wit's end with my desk top HP computer running Vista. I have had this thing for just over two years, and it has never been reiable. In the middle of things, the BSOD (blue screen of death) appears and the thing craps out. Sometimes it takes a long time to coax it back to life. Eventually, however, I get the damn thing going again. It happened again recently. I plan to take it in to the healers to see if anything can be done. I am not convinced whether it is a software or a hardware problem.

So, I decided to go up to Baybrook Mall and visit the snotty people at the Apple store. I really hate their commercials. Anyway, I walked in when the doors opened and spent about half an hour with a salesperson. I have to admit that their machines are rather attractive and, apparently, high performing. I asked tons of questions and pretty much convinced myself that this might be the way to go. There is one REALLY BIG catch, however. I would have to replace a lot of software. They have Mac versions of just about everything, of course.

Since I mainly use the computer for photo stuff, I had to find out about Lightroom and Photoshop conversion. I called Adobe, and guess what. No problem, except that you can't have both Mac and PC versions. You gotta choose. If you want to run on both platforms, you have to buy software for both. Since the other computers in the house (3 of them) are working just fine, this presents a problem. Now I gotta think a lot and see if I can get the desk top working reliably. If so, I will stick it out with the PC platform.

Keep tuned, film at 11.

Dad, like you know, Laura and I got the MacBook Pro earlier this year and I have to say I really like it. There is a learning curve though with shortcuts. We all know how to use a PC relatively fast with the right clicking and ctrl buttons, but the macs shortcuts are different. The more I use it the more I like it. When I got Microsoft office 2007 for the mac it came with three licenses, so maybe lightroom/photoshop/Doom (remember doom?) come with multiple licenses and we could go splitzies. Just thinking out loud.....at work.....sigh

ahhh, yes. the typical domino effect of technology change. it the same thing with cameras, huh? can't you do photo processing on just one computer? i mean, in the end the final picture files (tiffs, jpegs) will be transferable between platforms. and you can store apple files alongside PC files on a portable hard-drive...

in college and now on my desk at work is an HP laptop and an Apple MacPro. i use the HP for everyday work stuff and the apple is for data manipulation/unix based programs. i even remotely work on the Apple from home on my PC. apples deservedly got a bad rap in the 90's, but since ~2003 they are well designed and really good performing machines. about the only bad thing about apples is the price...

My friend has Vista. I mean, HAD Vista--crashed big time. I'm surprised you put up with it this long.

Technology can be a pain. Good luck with resolving your problem.

I bought a one-terabyte internal drive for my computer but returned it for one twice as big. After I installed the bigger one, I found out that my Dell 4700 (four years old) cannot handle a 2-Tb drive. Now to exchange a second time for the drive I had in the first place.

Windows 7 is getting a reasonably good press John, have a look at that. But you may need to upgrade your desktop to run it. I'm still happy with XP and don't intend to switch until I must.
I've found the Apple store staff very well trained and helpful. But I went over to the 'dark side' years ago and would not switch to them without really strong reasons.
