We visited Glastonbury Abbey today. It was quite a site. From the historical viewpoint, its destruction was precipitated by a little tiff that Henry VIII had with Rome because they would not annul his marriage (can't remember which one). Anyway, Hank got really peeved with the Pope, parted company with the Holy See, and asked all the catholic clergy to switch alliegience from Rome to Hank. Well, apparently, the brothers at Glastonbury decided they should do the right thing and maintain their relationship with Rome. Hank didn't like that and ordered the destruction of the Abbey. So, it has been in ruin for about 450 years.

That was the history (rather abbreviated American version thereof), but the thing that interested me was a photographic challenge. How do you capture the grandeur of this ruin. It is huge, about the size of Salisbury Cathedral. I shot and shot and shot. I would use several pictures if I were making a brochure or something. I decided on this one because I liked the colors and it captured the entire abbey. Left to right is the length of the church. The altar is on the right side. There is nothing left of the transcepts. I think architectural photography would be very hard.

Oh yeah, I forgot. This is where King Arthur and Guenivere are buried. Honest! Would a Monk lie to you so that you would give huge sums of money on your pilgrimage here when they were raising funds for the original construction. No, of course not.

The tiff was over the divorce he wanted from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. He wanted to marry Anne Boylen, (with whom he had Elizabeth I). Later Anne was beheaded so he could marry her lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour (NOT Dr.Quinn). And on and on. We gals like this stuff. PBS has a lavish Masterpiece Theater of the whole drama! Girls night!!
