I had a very interesting day. About a week ago I contacted Gordon W, the distinguished gentleman on the right, to see if he might be able to make some time to get together. I wanted to ask him about his full time RV lifestyle and also about his Photoshop techniques. His photographs are really far beyond good. Anyway, he agreed to meet with me and I said I would drive down to Port Lavaca today and see him.
Well, last night it became clear that the weather was going to be very nice today, so I decided I would rather fly down there (a little over an hour) rather than drive (a little over 3 hours). It would also be an opportunity to take Gordon up for some aerial photography. That is exactly what we did. When I arrived at Port Lavaca, Gordon was there on the ramp, camera in hand. As we were getting ready to go flying, we were met with a steady stream of the locals. We found out all about one guy's Cessna 170, we met the ramp rat, we met the new manager and some others. We were also informed, at least three times, that they were having a fly-in next weekend.
So finally we launched and started photographing. Gordon filled about 3 CF cards. He was like a waist gunner on a B-17. We had a great time. Afterward, he took me to his RV and we had a very nice, informative conversation about his full time RV lifestyle.
Now what really capped the day off was the return trip. I took off just before sunset and the air was absolutely smooth. As I headed back to LaPorte, I watched sunset become night. After dark it was almost eerie, floating along over a carpet of city lights as I got near Houston.
When I pulled back onto the apron in front of the hangar, my neighbor Rip had just finished the days work on his airplane. I could see that he needed a bit more help with the final task of the day, so I helped him drink a couple beers.
Life is good.
