Monument Hill: The granite vault at Monument Hill contains the remains of those Texas patriots who were the victims of the famous "Black Bean Incident," where one in ten beans were black and those drawing a black bean were executed; along with members of Dawson's massacred company. Also at Monument hill is a beautiful 48 foot shellcrete monument standing tall behind the tomb, high on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River.
Kreische home: In 1849 German immigrant Heinrich Kreische bought 172 acres on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River. On this site Kreische built the family home where he and wife Josepha Appelt raised six children. On the property he purchased was the Dawson/ Mier tomb, which he maintained until his death. Later the tomb became known as Monument Hill and is now a State Park.
Monument Hill State Park and the Kreische Home/Brewery Historical Site are at the same location one mile south of La Grange, Texas. For more information, see: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/monument_hill_and_kreische_brewery/

My 2nd Great Grandfather, Charles Hensley and his brother William were among those who were fortunate to draw the "white Bean". Charles was known for his violin playing during the time of their capture and later it is said, how he made his living.
We have visited Monument Hill...and found that it is truly awesome..we appreciate the care given to this Memorial of brave Texas pioneers.....
