James started his illustrious hair career enrolling in the first graduating class of the original North American International Hair Academy ran by the Vidal Sassoon organization, in San Francisco, California, June 1974.

He was very fortunate having some of the top instructors of the time at his side while studying his basic and advanced skills. Robert Edele was director of training, as well as Tony Beckerman and Alan Benfield Bush. Throughout his studies at the Academy, James was able to utilize the Advanced Sassoon Haircutting School, which was in conjunction with the Academy, to enhance his education.

James had the opportunity to view demonstrations from the top haircutters of the era; Roger Thompson, Trevor Sorbie, Paul Mitchell, Christopher Brooker, Fernando Romero, Hiroshi, Phillip Mason, Tony Beckerman, Scott Metzger, Dominick Flynn, Peter Wood, Dwight Miller, Maurice Tidy, Alan Benfield Bush, Horst, Arthur Trebble, Irvine and Rita Rusk, Tony & Guy, along with many others.

After graduation, James apprenticed for one year under Nicolas Church (Director) and Scott Metzger (Artist Director) at the Vidal Sassoon Salon in San Francisco, on Grant Ave., under the management of Dominick Flynn.

In 1980, James and Phillip began a partnership with R.A. Star Productions; promoting international hair artists to present haircutting seminars in San Francisco for other hairdressers’ educational advancement.

Throughout the course of the years, James and Phillip highlighted such artists as, Roger Thompson (Vidal Sassoon’s former top man), Henry Abell (A.T. Tramps Salon; Beverly Hills), Tony Beckerman, Graham Breakwell (Fashion Media; Seattle), Mark Pipino (Pipino-Buccheri Salon; N.Y.C.) and Paul Mitchell.

James has performed his own educational seminars and has done platform work in San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, Santa Clara, Long Beach, Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles, Denver, and Seattle with Paul Mitchell, Gary Gerard, Phillip Mason, Vidal Sassoon, Nutress Hair Products, Twenty-first Century Hair Products, Alva Hair Products, Con-Air, Precision Edge Cutlery and West Coast Beauty Supply; plus assisting in the back round production of Paul Mitchell shows and seminars throughout California and Nevada. He also has judged haircutting competition for the Long Beach Hairdressers Guild and West Coast Beauty Supply Shows and has been a hands-on instructor at the Gerard Hair Academy and Phillip Mason Hairdressers in San Francisco.

He is credited for doing hair in Playboy magazine, GQ magazine, Vogue magazine, Viva magazine, WWD, San Francisco Magazine, as well as local media covers, fashion shows and for international celebrities.

Hello James, I am moving to Thailand (Chaing Mai) and want to know if you know if there are any salons in Chaing Mai or Bangkok who have hair artists trained in Sassoon color and hair cuts. Thanks so much.

What's happening James? I was thinking about the days when I apprenticed for Phillip in SF.
Sounds like this are going well for you.
