The Volta river, Ghana

On the final day of the conference we went on an excursion to the Volta river delta. It is about a two hour drive from Accra to the delta. The roads are in an excellent condition almost from beginning to end, including the 20km of highway at the beginning of the route (which represents 100% of Ghana's highway system). At the delta are some holiday beach homes and a couple of resorts, co-existing uneasily with a fishermen's village without electricity or running water.

The ocean beach is unfortunately extremely filthy, covered in rubbish. Keeping the environment clean appears not to be a priority for the villagers, even though it reduces its attractiveness to visitors.
