Hi, I now live in Melbourne Australia but Iam an ex Battersea boy and at the moment I am trying to research my family tree. A gentleman related to me by marriage was Mr Wallace. I have a watch that was presented to him in appreciation of 50 years service at Philips Mills. Does anyone remember this gentleman if so a christian name for him would help me a lot. Jim, You have to pay to have a gallery on Pbase, it is very cheap, and very worthwhile. I have made some good friends here, and had lots of contacts from the past, people that otherwise I would never had heard from again before I shuffle of this mortal coil. I pinched the last bit from someone else. They just beat me to inventing it.

john i knew pat and ralph very well , pat was a old mate of mine, we played football for the team andrews sponsered ,athenians , in the invicta sunday league. pat jimmy and ralph 3 smashing blokes , i heard that pat became disabled and died in cornwall , is that true , what one of the sisters did you marry , i hear some of them emigrated , jim .

Hello Jim, My father died about 30 years ago, he never reached retirement age. Incredible that you worked at Andrews, do you remember Pat and Ralph Fairman, they are my wife's brothers, they worked at Andrews for years about that time. You cannot post pictures onto Pbase, it is registered to me only. If you can send photos as an attachent to an email, let me know and I will post my email address for you to send them to me and I can then post them. I worked at the Mills from age 15 in 1959 for ten years, bloody hard work, but quite well paid. I left after a few altercations with one particular bad manager.

john i also forget many names i used to know at the mills , i think its called old age , is your dad still alive?, i went out to the city once with a very old driver cant remember his name , we brought back 9 tons of index card on a three ton scammel and trailor , big bonus that week ,when i left the mills i worked on andrews removals for a while , another good old job . ps how do i post pics on here , jim ,

lOVELY TO SEE THE PHOTO OF MY MUM, MAISIE GOLDSMITH AND AUNT JESS ON YOUR PAGE. JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT MUM PASSED AWAY IN MARCH THIS YEAR, AGED 88. AUNT JESSIE PASSED AWAY IN SEPTEMBER 2010 AGED 96! IF ANYONE ELSE HAS ANY PHOTOS OF MUM OR AUNT JESS, PLEASE LEAVE A NOTE AND I WILL CONTACT YOU AS I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM. MY BROTHER ALSO WORKED LOADING THE BARGES AT PHILLIPS MILLS FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. THANKS. JANE

Hello Jim, I worked inside most of the time, did a short time on the lorries. I started there in 1959 and worked until 1969. If you were there after 1959 we probably met some time. There was a lot of people there,and quite a high turnover as well. I wish my memory was better, I seem unable to recall the names of people I worked beside. I would like very much to put your photo in this gallery Jim. If you had a photo of yourself at the age you worked there would be fantastic. Of course if you dont want to, that's ok.

My Dad Ted Rice worked at Phillips Mills in the 60's, started as a driver on the 3 wheeler Scammell trucks and moved on to working in the offices until they closed

I was a student at Battersea College of Technology (Ex Battersea Poly and later to become the University of Surrey)from 1953-1959. Like many fellow students I did temporary work at Phillips Mills during several vacations. Generally I worked as a 'helpman', out on a lorry throwing the sacks up on to the load where the driver tied it down. They had some three wheeled Scammel(?) articulated lorries and some larger vehicules. From shoe shops, to cigarette factories, to Marks and Spencer in Baker Street,they covered a large area of greater London and the suburbs. I have very good memories of the way we 'college boys' were accepted by the regulars, although I think we had to earn our stripes by hard work. What happened to the site and the company? I would be interested to know.

my grandfather William John Bailey 'Bill Bailey'worked at Phillips Mills I think he left there in the late 50's. I believe he was a labourer. He passed away in 1961.I was born in 1945 and we lived at 101 Battersea Bridge Road,My grandfather and Grandmother lived at 105 which was opposite the police station. My gran used to take in British Road Service lorry drivers and when they called at Polly's(Bills wife)From about 6 years of age I would go with the drivers when they parked their vehicles in the lorry park in Howie Street(the name escapes me..Maynards?) My aunt worked in St Ivel the butter factory in Elcho Street.My parents both worked at some time in Morgans,who didn't We moved inthe 60's when they pulled down the houses and built ethelburga estate.Lovely memories of old battersea

I lived in thessaly road battersea, in the 50's and 60's knew ralph and his family they lived in thessaly square over the road from where I lived on the Patmore Estate. really lovely to see a picture of ralph. thks

My mum and dad met across the road from Phillip Mills,at the Morgan Crucible factory,in 1944,she a secretary,he an under-graduate seconded to London for War Work,testing radio components.

Like your photos of phillips mills, I used to live in crichton street just off the wandworth road in the 1950s. I worked in the printing trade at wise&co stamar street battersea. All our waste and offcuts went to phillips mills.
