Comments to me from Police Constable David Hardman. Who was sent to the scene of the accident within minutes of it happening. The facts as he personally believes them. The car was not being driven at excessive speed. The driver was not drunk, or on drugs. He has reason to understand that a wheel had been removed to have a puncture repaired a few days before the crash. There is a possibilty that the wheel had not been retightened enough, came loose, and affected the steering. Steve Currie, guitarist with T-Rex was a member of Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club until his death in a car crash. Police Constable 522T Dave Hardman attached to Barnes Police station. Is a member of Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club. Colin Robson, mechanic at Wardo Autos, where the crashed car was taken. Was a member of Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club. John Cooper, (photographer) is a member of Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club. Note, the safety crash barriers were installed after the accident. There had been crashes at this spot before. The speed bumps in the road to slow traffic even further, were placed there in 2007.

this is a wonderful place to remember the great man himself...thank you so much Mr.Cooper. I did read all the comments and felt a bit sad because of those comments that are filled with hate against Gloria Jones.People should not forget that she was a victim of that terrible crash too. It was not Glo who took Marc -it was faith..and Gloria lost so much more than we...she lost her beloved one and father of her child..So,please stop the injustice against Marc`s love....let us a keep a lot of Marc in our hearts...forever...Wolfgang(Elliot.rex)

Marc Bolan was truly one of a kind,such a beautiful man not only visually but artistly. his poetic wording unforgettable and could never be copied. marc brought a whole new life to music that will never be recreated. there are only so many people who are just so amazingly talented and marc bolan was one of them. took so soon, so much more was to come. but we have his voice to listen too aslong as we keep the music going.

Hello John, I am not a musician and find it hard to explain but, it is very difficult to claim any musician had an influence over any other musician. Unless someone actually states they are copying another artists style, it is hard to prove whether they did or did not. T-Rex were very special, as were all pop groups. Irrespective of all claims as to who copied or not. I just enjoy the music and am eternally gratefull that such talented people exsist. The end result is that we get such beautiful music to listen to.

marc was the biggest influence to me personally. i shook his hand after a gig t.rex did in newcastle in the 70s.i rememember to this day as hes hand was really sweaty after just coming of stage.i was only 14 then, it was through marc i wanted to be a singer for which i have been now for 30 plus years.i sing in a bon jovi tribute band called bon jordi and i go out as a solo singer to my solo stuff is mostly t.rex classics timeless songs. the responce when i do these songs are incredible only to prove how popular marcs music really was i was pleased to see on the picture board above picture 3 the 2 cherubs either side of the bust are still there i put them ,there when i last visited the tree.i miss marc everyday of my life. a funny thing happened when i last visited the tree i took a photo of the tree with my mobile phone and i seen on the picture what looks like marc bolans face within the trees.ive never shared that with anyone till now but kinda spooky but nice.god bless everyone ........danny mccoy

It is strange, I am not superstitious or believing really in the afterlife for most people/souls. But I find it totally possible that he has come back as a white swan, and frequents this site in various animal personaes. A butterfly is one of his favorites when brother Harry visits the site.

Hi WARRIOR, The problem with Golders Green is that it is a working crematorium and therefore they clear the flowers away on a quite fast and regular basis and a number of famous people including Keith Moon and Paul (Free) Kossoff were also cremated there so that their fans also take flowers there. Although fresh flowers are tidied up when they have been reduced to almost nothing at the Tree Site, there are still messages there and silk flowers from 2005 and before that, so that at the Tree site TAG do try to ensure that people's tributes are lasting and this is no doubt one reason why the English Tourist Board recognised The Tree Site as Marc's Rock Shrine in their guide 'England Rock's last year (2007) nicely in time for his 30th Anniversary :-)

About Slade and how long they continued to sell records for after Marc died? Don't know. It's pages like this which do make the work we have put in at the site since we formed TAG back in 1999 and saved the tree from being felled as it would have been in 2002. John, there were a lot of us aged around 15 when this happened, that can be a strange age anyway, however marc and his music got us through a lot of hard times whether it was school, parents, boyfriend probs whatever, our world came crashing down when Marc died,and we read and believed what was in the papers. We all needed someone to blame, and you never forget something like that or how you felt then. You have read what people think below, minds will not be changed. The most important thing of all is Marcs music lives on. x

Trish, I find it sad that so many people want "Justice". (whatever that is). What they really mean is for Gloria to be punished even more. She was driving, and had an accident. Lots of people have accidents while driving. She was very unlucky in that her boyfriend/lover was killed in that accident. She did not do it on purpose, and has to live with that knowledge for the rest of her life. I am surprised at the level of hatred that some fans direct at Gloria. You would think that she had deliberately murdered him the way they demand justice. I drive past the crash site every week, I can understand how easy it was to crash there, I can feel sorry for Gloria. I wish her well.

To John Collard, Trying to find out which rock star has sold more records than another rock star is very difficult. As you know record companies are always fiddling their sales figures to get their star to the top of the pops or as close as possible. I think we should just accept that Slade and Marc Bolan were both very good and that their music appealed to different people. I have read that Mickey Finn died of alcohol related liver problems on the 11th of January 2003 aged 55.

Its a beautiful place. I used spent the better part of a day trying to find the tree in 1980 and visited regularly since then. I live in Aus now, wierdly some kid drove his car into my fence and died. It was very sad. I am glad to see the site again and that it is being treated with respect. I prefferred the orange and yellow paint on the barrier though. Peace

If it was slade who sold more records then how many years did slade carry on after marcs tragic death. In my opinion thats the only way i could see how slade would have sold more. I have been a life long fan and have one of Marcs jackets. Ive been lucky enough to work in a few glam rock bands i.e Sweet Kenny and tour with Mud, Bay City Rollers and meet some of Marcs True Friends. They all love and miss Marc they told me some real funny stories and had good times with Marc. I asked Dave again, why there were no charges brought against Gloria. He said the police checked all the facts very carefully (because it was a high profile case)and decided it was a pure accident therefore there was no one to prosecute. If they had decided there was someone to charge for causing his death, they would have done so, wherever in the world that person was at that time. No court ever decided that Gloria was guilty of an offence. She never appeared at a court because she was never summonsed to appear at court. This is all printed because I heard it with my own ears from the policeman who was actually there minutes after the accident, who went to the hospital with Gloria and her brother, who spoke to her brother extensively during the time at the hospital. I am very sorry that all these facts do not fit in with your perception of events.

Marc Bolan was my hero, I loved his music cos it gave me the imagination to dream my own dreams. When Marc died a part of me died too, it has taken me 30 years to find the courage to visit his shrine and pay my respects to such a beautiful man. Your songs were the first I would listen to, I didn't understand, but I liked the tunes,lonely teenage nights with the radio, or parties with my friends performing the torch show. This is my song for Marc and Mickey, company in teenage years, had a photo and recordings, but now you get my tears, now the chance is gone forever to see you playin' live, the only thing I can do for you is sing this song with September Drive. from my 'Song for Marc and Mickey' I wrote for my band September Drive in 2003 after Mickey's death. Marc Bolan had died when i was just 4,and yet even at that age, i was dancing to his music! Ever since then he has been my idol. The most inspirational, talented, fantastic musician i have ever come across. He'll always live on. Thankyou Marc, we are all very blessed.

I watched a bit of a program on tv the other night it was in memory of marc coz of him being 60 this month. I wish I had seen it all. But I want to say that when they spoke to gloria, an when she was singing one of marcs songs, I was thinking "I hate you just as much now as I did back then".

i was born in 1972 and my dad loves marcs music as a seventies child i think t-rex and marc bolan are legends to me!! my dad tells everthing he knows about marc and the footage of the band is amazing. i am sure he is looking down and be proud of his fans and the shrine in barnes, knowing what he left us wasnt for nothing. rest in peace marc we still love ya mate!!!!!!!!!!

It's funny that the 'Queen" of Glamrock and a gypsy in heart & soul, died on Queens Ride and the street just behind the crashplace and Queens Ride is called: Gypsy Lane! Was this his 'exit door to heaven? I believe he also said that he believed that he would die in a carcrash and because he was so small, the car would have to be a Mini!! How weird no??? Well, time will tell..... All this is not realy important but what is, is that dearest Marc isn't here in the flesh anymore..One day I'll def. will see him again....until then Marc dearest!

Was surfing around the 'net looking for Marc Bolan sites. Found this one and was brought back to a time when I was a teenager in the States and a big fan of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. I lived in Kansas at the time and I got a lot of flak from my gym coach and some of the more uptight citizens of Wichita. The guy made great music and was a dynamic entertainer. I still love to listen to him. One shouldn't pass judgement on Miss Jones as you have no idea what she went through. Marc was a grown man who should have known better than to get in a car if they had been drinking. But many of us have,including me. I no longer drink but I don't pass judgment on others. It's their cross to bear. And everybody that lives in the States isn't nuts-just our politicians! I,for one,love the British...especially the great music you gave us. Especially Marc Bolan.

Hello Mr.Cooper: First of all, I thought the same thing about "Gloria Jones", as does my best friend, she lives in the U.S.A. I live in Canada. But they are wrong when they say Gloria had no drugs or alcohol in her, oh yes she did, I read the story where her and Marc Bolan had gone to a pub, or a club of some sort, and they were celebrating their "love" so to speak, and they were drinking wine. When they left this place Marc gave his chauffeur the night off, as Marc planned to ride home with Gloria, even his chauffeur was rather reluctant to leave him, but Marc insisted he was in good hands. But we both agree that she should have stayed to face the music, (no punn intended), for me if I had done something like that, and I really loved someone, I would feel I deserved it.I have caught a lot of flack from people because I feel this way, but as I said to them, how would you feel if it was someone you loved, your daughter, or son, wife, riding in the car with someone like Gloria? I can't even imagine how Marc's parents must have taken it, most likely with total devastation! And with what she was driving, and the fact she took out a chain link fence, and a cement wall, and snapped a metal pole right in half, how could she not have been going at an excessive speed! If she was going at a normal speed, she would have been able to at least bring the car to a stop and Marc might still be alive. Did her brother not remove Marc from the car? I thought we are not suppose to move a victim!

As I stated previously, my friend Dave Hardman, a police constable who was at the scene of the crash minutes after it happened. He says Gloria was not unconcious when he arrived there, she was not unconcious for 3 days after the crash. He spoke to her She was obviously distraught. Dave who worked that area on the night shift at that time had dealt with many people who were drunk and on drugs. Going purely by his vast experience in interviewing drunk and drugged people, he states absolutely that Gloria was not drunk or on drugs all the time he was talking to her.

It has been reported that Gloria Jones was unconscious at the accident scene and remained that way for 3 days. How could anyone on the scene tell whether she was drunk or on drugs if she was unconscious? The only way to determine that would have been at the hospital through toxicology testing. That being said, she should have had the decency to stay and face the authorities in the U.K. Pewtor Suitor, please don't paint Americans with such a broad brush. There are many of us here who dearly love and admire the amazing talent we have enjoyed courtesy of our neighbors from across the pond. We grieve just as deeply when those like Bolan and Lennon have been taken. Marc's death was the result of a very unfortunate accident. Lennon's death was the result of a violent act by a very sick individual. Murder and drunk driving are not exclusive to citizens of the U.S. It happens the world over every day.

Mr Suitor, my friend David Hardman, the Police Constable who was at the scene of the crash within minutes, and accompanied Gloria and the others to Queen Marys Hospital, stated absolutely at the time that she showed no sign of being drunk or on drugs. Im sorry but I blame gloria, obviously drunk, escaped to the U.S to avoid charges. Another case of americans taking our stars ( like lennon ), I also think her vocals detract from his songs.

Guest, I borrowed the aerial view from one of the free satellite picture programs, I forget which one. It does indeed show the location very well. The old railway lines along the side of the road are just interesting, quite rare, I put them in as I was showing all apects of the area.

I was a young fan in the early My People Are Fair Days - have dubious 'claim to fame' of later travelling with a friend Sylvia (whose husband worked for EMI), Marc and Gloria - at the wheel - in same mini on same road a few weeks before the terrible day... the one and only time I met him.
