The second hand stopped briefly every time it advanced to the "next second." However, upon reaching the top of the dial ("12"), it stopped for twice as long as elsewhere. Perhaps I WAS put in a trance, but my memory of this odd behavior is vivid. Trust me.
Dave, possibly you misunderstand the concept of a "second" hand.
They move 6 degrees, then stop for one second, then move again.
They tend to do this forever, until some external influence changes the pattern.
It is possible to enter into a form of trance, if you stare at the hand doing this long enough. I had lots of practise at this in the very distant past when I was working ?
Seeing this reminds me of many public clocks of Germany in the 1970s: their second hands always stopped for one second upon reaching the end of a minute. To this day I am baffled by this. Why did the hand stop for a second before beginning to register the next minute?
