The moat (a death trap).

I was thinking of walking across the moat here. I pushed my walking stick into the bed to test for firmness. It went down easily into soft mud about 2' 6". If I had kept pushing it would have gone under completely with no sign of stopping. I crossed somewhere else.

Jason, this place being called a Moat is a bit of a misnomer.
I call it a moat, because thats how it was described to me many years ago. There is no castle or any defensive position all along its length, which is a few miles.
The best bit is walled both sides, I will try to get some pictures of that when it is a bit warmer.

This might be provincial ignorance on my part, but are there moats which were designed with ease of crossing in mind? When I looked in the Architectural Dictionary it said "moat -- see also, death trap." Of course, it was the 1296 AD edition so it actually said "ye mote -- see ye allso, ye deade trappe."

Glad you tested it first. Your training has paid off many times.
