Who or what did this ?

A plastic bottle of water was left on the garden shelf by accident.
This piece of wood was found in this position in a hole in the bottle.
The broken pieces were lying in front of the bottle.
I took the wood out of the hole and tried to smash another hole in the plastic bottle using the same bit of wood. I could not even crack or split the plastic no matter how hard I tried.

That was me... I had no patience to read all those long stories... So, cracked the bottle...

Right on the money, Dave.

"Unpure atmosphere surrounding London" I can relate to that.

I'll try to make this brief, as I am often wont to do. Imagine this (I know you can): an Alien ship, on a mission to collect specimens of Earth's flora and fauna in preparation for You Know What (it's too horrible to say directly), is returning to base but cannot break free of the Earth’s gravitational field. The ship’s commander correctly assumes that the ship is overloaded and orders one of his minions to jettison some cargo to remedy the problem. One of the items jettisoned is a piece of wood from a tree; it has been coated by the Alien quartermaster with a thin layer of an anti-contaminant substance. The wood falls from a great height and hits the plastic bottle. Upon being touched by the specimen’s coating, the plastic becomes unusually brittle, allowing the projectile to crash through. In the unpure atmosphere surrounding London, the coating then evaporates, rendering a follow-up breakage impossible.

Of equal importance is that the photograph is identified by date and author, raising the hope of a certain instructor that his lesson plan was well received.
