A possible explanation. I am not an expert on their waste products. These lumps appear to be growing, they are either grey or brown, and only visible at low tide. They only grow? on one side of the pier. I try to walk along the river bed at spring low tide. There is a tide range of about 21 foot at Putney. You cannot walk a yard without finding something interesting at the waters edge.
