Tug of War in the Solent

Stokes Bay

Maybe these captains had a wager as to who had the most pulling power.
Anyway the big ship won, it towed the small boat backwards up the Solent until they were out of sight.
I can honestly say I have never seen this happen before.
PS, you cannot see the tow rope in this photo, they were at least a mile away from me.
But with binoculars it was very clearly seen.

Update to this photo, apparently some tankers need so much space to stop, that it is very difficult to park in the confined space of the Solent.
So the tug will act as a brake as and when needed, and maybe help the ship to steer into its mooring.
