The basis is from stone, the walls a mixture of leem, straw and manure. At the Dogon (page 5) the man and woman have different huts(barns)for different usage, and are not allowed to enter the barn from the opposite sex.

Thanks Kim, they used them as storing rooms for their crops: sorghum and millet
