The protector of the Shrine of Sheikh Hussein - Ethiopia.
Lost in the lowland planes of Bale, lies the sacred shrine of Sheikh Hussein, which has become the site of one of Ethiopians most extraordinary pilgrimages. Since the Sheikh’s death, seven hundred years ago, the pilgrimages have evolved into an amalgam of saint cult and ancient indigenous ritual. By tradition, the pilgrimages' departure from their remote villages is governed by waxing and waning of the moon. Most come from Ethiopians remote villages. Some will travel by horse or mule, but most will walk often bare foot for up to six weeks or more to reach the shrine. This pilgrimage takes place twice a year once in July to celebrate the anniversary of the death of Sheikh Hussein and once in October to celebrate the birth of the prophet Mohammed.
