Ao Naga woman performing at the Hornbill festival Kohima - Nagaland - India
The Hornbill Festival of Nagaland falls in the month of December. it is a cultural extravaganza. One can see the different rich Naga culture in one place. This festival is held in a Naga heritage Village called Kisama which is 12 Km from Kohima and is permanently created for celebration of this festival.
The sleepy town of Kohima comes alive and its transformed into a bustling gateway to Kisama, as visitors from all over the world come together to celebrate the Hornbill Festival. A week-long party, the Hornbill Festival is a treat for your senses- traditional textiles in a riot of colours, agility is redefined as both men and women break out in folk dances to the rhythmic beat of the local log drum. A Rock concert for music lovers, an indulgent spread for gourmets.
This festival shows the dormitories (morungs) of each tribe. this shows the ancient ways of learning to socialize and to live in a community, where values of survival are taught, against back drop of head hunting and constant fear of the enemy and animals. it is also a school where they learn the lessons of life such as bravery, loyalty, honesty, arts and crafts. they also learn the oral traditions of their people, their stories, myths and legends and pass it down through the generations.
