Thank you for sharing this gallery with our PBase community. Not only are your photos exquisite, but the people we see through your eyes touch us with their dignity and humanity. It helps bring home the point that the world's troubles are not caused by the ordinary people but by a few who have more power than is good for them. Voted.

Your portraits are wonderful. I know how tough it can be to capture candids like this. I am travelling in Ethiopia for a month in Jan 2006, mostly the south and central areas, totake photos and see the country.

It's an old saying," Black is beautiful " and how true it is. You have brought home some beautiful images .Thanks,Robert Woolrich.
Incredible shots! Perfect gallery. Congratulations.
a great gallery,
I love it. It makes me want to travel there.
Yes, fascinating it is. Great photos - a piece of information to each picture would be nice.
Great pictures. The images are from different parts of Ethiopia (Abyssinia). It sad to see the hatred between fellow Ethiopians which I gathered from the statement made by Konso. I have lived in Konso and most of the southern regions as a volunteer aid worker and what I have seen is not what Konso's statement reflect. There are favoritism when it comes to the govt. and that is evident in any nation (even the western). Talking about slavery, there are lots of Ethiopians who have been traded for slavery aside from the southern region. Abyssinia used to extend to the west past Chad, south to Rwanda and east to Yemen. I would recommend that Mr. Konso to do some research and learn more about the beautiful nation and about the society that created it instead of making baseless statement. It is amazing to see such diversity but one thing I wish is for all the ethnic groups to live as one, as humans. I apologies for posting such a political message in this guest book, I didnt want others (with limited knowledge about the history of Ethiopia) to be misguided. For the person who created this website, I can not thank you enough for showing my culture and tradition.
Visiting again, great gallery.
Noticed the comment below in response to mine. No offense was intended, I thought the northern part was Eritrea and that Abyssinia was below that. I've read quite a bit about that region but my memory is quite a bit hazy since that was a few years ago. However, as I recall famine existed in all parts of Ethiopia and was promoted by the ruling Derge as a way against the Oromos, Eritreans, Tigreans etc. Unfortunately the policy of famine continues to exist in Africa today as a way to single out and annhilate people that are ethnically different from the ruling majority.
This is a beatiful gallery! Congratulations.
Nice portraits, enjory your gallery
Viny: The phots are NOT from Abyssinia!. Abyssinia represents northern half of Ethiopia where people have 'semitic' features and are followers of orthodox christianity. Abyssinians, despite having been the king-making people of Ethiopia (ruling people), have nothing genuinly African muchless somethig remotely postive to offer the world. Their (Abysssinian Ethiopians') greatest legacy has been the endless and sad famine episodes. Most of the pictures by Johan are from southern Ethiopia. Indigenous peoples in southern Ethiopia have, for centuries, been hunted down (by the Abyssinians) and EXPORTED as slaves to Arabia, Middle East, India. Even today, these people are far from being free as they are continued to be treated as slaves or the untouchables in their own homelands by the "Ethiopians" (Abyssinians). So despite the smiles, lets remember that all is not well for these beautiful people who are the "last of true Africans".
Fascinating gallery of Abyssinia. Thanks
What a wonderful gallery! You captured the beauty of these people so well. I enjoyed every shot!
This is just the most wonderful gallery, I wish we could see things with your eyes all the time! Thanks so much for sharing these fabulous photos.

Absolutely fantastic gallery ((with a big woooow))!!!

Fascinating Ethiopia? Absolutely right!! Every portrait in this gallery reveals that fascination. Bravo, Johan!
An amazing array of faces from what must have been a fantastic journey. Wonderful, Johan!
The absolute best of human images on this site. Very well done. These are images to be proud of.
A wonderful and coloful gallery of a culture I am not familiar with other than the news reportings. Do the different colors and dress represent a specific thing?
superbe photos ....
As you say it is nice to see another happy side of this country .... Or just photos of this country so few visited ....
Long time i'm thinking of going, your gallerie is more than motivating ....
Johan congratulations. Excellent shots and colors. Thanks!
!!!!!five star photography!!!!!
P.S. In English: I gave Johan compliments about his "streetphotography" which excells above anything done in the Western part of the world.
Thanks everybody for the nice comments,
for Dan, a Canon 10D

As gorgeous as anything I've ever seen in National Geographic!

beautiful work. when did you got to ethipia?
WOW.- I really like your gallery, excellent compositions and expresions!..for sure you did a good job.
It is so pretty. Through a camera you have captured Ethiopian people's culture. It's amazing.
Very interesting gallery!
What beautiful faces in this gallery! And the beaded jewelry is so amazing!
Interesting gallery. Some terrific expressions and personas captured here. All too often many of us only see what the media wants us to see and we see depressing images of sickly and saddened people. So refreshing to see another viewpoint and so nicely captured at that.
Great shots. Great gallery!!!
Great stuff. Some very nice images.
Absolutely fab! Great shots and I am very envious. Mark
