Biography (photography related):

Joel Santos was born in 1978 in Lisbon, Portugal. He holds an honours degree in Economics and a master's degree in Economics and Management of Science and Technology. Despite being an economist, he has dedicated the last four years to his greatest passion: Photography. His images cover all kinds of photographic genres, from landscapes and portraits to macrophotography and photojournalism. The common thread throughout all of his work is his masterly use of composition and light, which renders his photography unique.
He has won several national and international photography awards for his work, including being awarded the first prize in the "Nature" category of the "Prémio de Fotojornalismo Visão/BES de 2005" (2005 edition of the Portuguese version of the World Press Photo contest) and an honorable mention in the same category in the 2006 edition of that contest.
His articles and photographs feature regularly in several Portuguese photography and travel magazines, namely O Mundo da Fotografia Digital (Portuguese version of UK's Digital Camera magazine), FotoDigital, Volta ao Mundo and Rotas&Destinos. His work has also been featured in the official corporate magazines and newsletters of corporations such as Microsoft Portugal and Microsoft Windows Vista. In all, he has published over a hundred written articles and a far larger number of photographs.
Many of his photos have also been published outside of Portugal, namely featuring in Digital Photo (UK, Emap) and La Integral (Spain, RBA) magazines. His photos made the cover of magazines five times: one of them, featured in the cover of an issue of the Chilean magazine In-Lan (Chile Airlines), received an award. Canon has featured his work in three of its European catalogs and has invited him to lead several photography workshops on its behalf.
Joel Santos' work has also been shown in several individual and collective exhibitions, namely in Portugal and East Timor. Several of his photographs have been used for editorial and commercial purposes by firms and corporations in Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the U.K., U.S.A. and Australia.
Since September 2007, he is the Editor in Chief of "O Mundo da Fotografia Digital", the portuguese bestselling photo magazine. In October 2007, he wrote and publihed the major Portuguese manual of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom ("Fotografia Digital com Adobe Photoshop Lightroom", published by "Centro Atlântico").

5th PhotoJournalism Award 2004 VISAO/BES: finalist with two photos. Jury: Philip Jones Griffiths, Ian Berry, Jean-Marc Bouju, Ruth Eichhorn, Françoise Piffard. 192 photographers submitted 4061 photos.
6th PhotoJournalism Award 2005 VISAO/BES: 1st place winner, Nature Category. Jury: James Nachtwey (Time Magazine photographer, VII agency), Maryanne Golon (Time Magazine photographic editor), Alain Mingam (journalist/photographer, Reporters Without Frontiers), Christopher Morris (photographer, VII agency). 204 photographers submitted 5815 photos. Also had three finalist photos.
7th PhotoJournalism Award 2006 VISAO/BES: Honorable Mention, Nature Category. Jury: MaryAnne Golon (Time Magazine Director), Kadir van Lohuizen (Vu agency), Stanley Greene (Vu agency), Moisés Saman (Newsday - New York - photo journalist) and Jean-François Leroy (Institut des Images & Images-Evidence). 215 photographers submitted 6141 photos.
Wild Places Award – Nature colour category. 33rd International Photo Salon – Racal Clube Algarve/2007, promoted by FIAP (Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique) and PSA (Photographic Society of America).
