These photos are from both the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation sections of Plum Island, Essex Co., MA. From December 2005 to January 2007 I went there about once every 1-2 weeks with my camera. Some days provide cooperative photographic subjects and conditions, others not so much, but rarely is it a fruitless birding day there. The geographic location, sandy beaches, rocky reefs, dunes, scrub, woods, freshwater wetlands, and saltmarsh all combine to make it an unparalleled birding experience within an hour of Boston. A huge added bonus is that Tom Wetmore's excellent web pages help plan a day of birding accordingly based on tides and who's been seen where on the island within the past few days. Thus, Plum Island monopolized most of the time I was able to devote to birding while living in MA.
