In an amazing stroke of luck, as I was leaving for the night, I passed by the STS-129 astronauts as they were taking their own pictures of the vehicle. Not wanting to interrupt their schedule, I patiently waited until they were finished before I asked if I could take their picture. The crew was gracious enough to grant my request and I am forever grateful. In all my years of doing this, this is the first - and only time - I've ever encountered the crew while taking pictures. NOTE: to keep from taking too much of their schedule, I did not take time to set up a perfect photo and I used whatever settings the camera already had on it. Hence, the astronauts are grossly underexposed. To fix it in postprocessing would bring out all the noise. Obviously, the photo is not up to standards but it's better than nothing. I didn't normally carry an external flash with me for night photos and I didn't think the pop-up flash would do much good. This has been fixed - I now carry an external flash with me wherever I go...just in case.
