62.JPG

A unique, eye-level view of one of the Solid Rocket Booster's (SRB's) Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system Exhaust Ducts. These ducts vent decomposed hydrazine gas, which power a turbine that, in turn, spins a hydraulic pump that provides hydraulic power to the Actuator, which gimbals the Nozzle during launch. Just below the Duct, seams of the Aft Skirt's Thermal Curtain can be seen. The Exhaust Duct (and the bottom of the Aft Skirt) is encased in "Insta-Foam" to protect them from splashdown damage. Below the Thermal Curtain (light grey color) is the lip of one of the Mobile Launch Platforms's (MLP) cutouts for the SRB plume. Straight down from here is the SRB Flame Trench. The dark grey at the top of the picture is the shadow of one of the horizontal water pipes that carry sound supression water across the MLP.

I loved this picture for the many horizontal layers of colors...maybe only understood to an SRB person.
