Formerly known as Spanish Sahara, Western Sahara is located on the Westerly part of this great desert and was completely annexed by the Kingdom of Morocco back in 1979 after Islamic Republic of Mauritania washed its hands from it. Since then that a guerrilla war with the Saharawi Polisario Front contesting Rabat's sovereignty has been active but cool down with only minor confrontations in the last decade. Still an uncounted number of active land mines are spread all over the territory and pirates cruise freely in the non-protected area after the 1500km army "wall" that splits the country in half. Political opinions diverge about this subject now and some people defend its autonomy as others contest that Polisario main supporter Algeria wants a piece of Atlantic Ocean for strategic proposes that's why the endless relation and money/land support. Nowadays more than 20,000 refugees live in the southern part of Algeria in the refugee camp of Tindouf waiting to come back to the "not promised" land. Moroccan government of Mohammad VI has for already some years intended to receive all these refugees. The answer from the Polisario side seems to be no. As personal contact with people I conclude that Moroccans don't quite understand why "Saharawis" as being Moroccans still persist on staying in Algeria and don't come back to their homeland.
