The weather at this event was a big disappointment. I actually hired a 600mm lens with a monopod, which was a mistake - too big and unwieldy for fast Aircraft. (I ended up getting best results with my trusty 70-200mm zoom.)
I also got into an altercation with some guy for blocking his view with the aforementioned big lens, and then I felt compelled to apologize to the family sitting next to me for the expletives which had been spewing forth from my mouth.
After the first day, I accidentally formatted a whole CompactFlash card after I incorrectly believed that I had already transferred the images off it. Nevertheless, I Managed to recover most of them, though (except the best ones, as Murphy's law would have it ...)
Also, it was a very long walk from the car park to the stand, and hauling around two cameras, a whole lot of lenses, and the 600mm lens case through the crowd in soaking wet weather was not fun. I don't recommend it.
Lots of lessons to be learned here. I hope to learn from my mistakes, and get better results next time. Next Avalon Airshow is in 2011.
