Diego Garcia is a Coral Attol in the middle of the British Indian Ocean Territory directly south of India. I spent about 7 months there in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, from Oct 02 to May 03.

I was in (ON HOUSE ARREST) Diego Garcia fom June 1985 - June 1986 working in the U. S. Navy for NSF Security as a "Patrolman"! I finally got "PAROLED" and when to Rota, Spain from there. Returned......"Just passing through in 1989" for a few days on my way to the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in the I. O. (Indian Ocean) & (WORLD CRUISE). My last and as far as I know the last I. O. Cruise in the Navy......"At least for a while"! Everyone now goes to the Persian Gulf! I don't mind looking up old friends and looking at pictures of that place, but I NEVER WANT TO GO BACK THERE AGAIN! That chapter in my life is CLOSED! "FOREVER"!

A beautiful place once you get used to the isolation. I was there from November 1984 to December 1985. I was in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Naval Investigative Service Agency (NISRA). In December 1985, I transferred to Adak, Alaska - yes, it was quite a culture shock. If I could, I'd return to Diego Garcia...but I'd never go back to Adak again. Well, maybe I would return to Adak to see how it looks now with the U. S. Navy out of there.

hey it looks different, i was there july 75 through july 76, and we didnt have any women, nice to see some enjoying the rock. " when i was there you were here, now im here and you are there."

Great photos. I'm in the Royal Marines and am due to be posted to DG next month as part of Naval Party 1002. Nice to see a few tit-bits of what is to come... and i can't say i'm disappointed!

Was there Feb 92 to Mar 93. Worked at the Ships Store Proc. office. Met my husband there in Oct '92. Got married in '96. He quit in '95. We both enjoyed "make your own pizza night"!

AF Ammo troop, stationed there Jan 93-Dec 93. If you have to be seperated from your family, there is no better place.

great shots, brings back a lot of memories. was on the island from 12/83-12/84. i was attached to wc660 ASW shop NAF AIMD. I wonder if P3's even deploy there anymore.

I was also there from oct. 2002 till may 2003.. those were the good old times.. :) maybe even seen you a time or two... anywho.. was taking a trip down memory lane.. looking at your photos!

Great memories! I was based out there 97-98 with HM Royal Marines - Landing Craft. I'm civvie now but I'd love just a few more drinks at the Brit Club !!!

i was there from 11/81 to 3/82 i was a a merchant ship loaded with ammo called the austral lightning out of san francisco all we did was get loaded at the seamans trailer were the launches came in i caught a couple of tiger sharks out in the lagoon and we had red snapper every nite iwas a cook and baker the supply boat used to always come out at lunch time so they could eat aboard our vessel all i remember was no broads and the 23 hour flight to san fran when i left in march of 83 i did not miss it at all

I was on the island 1997-1998. I worked for Naval Media Center DG. Did a morning radio show, sports and news. Fished most othe day away. Turtle cove was an excellent place to hang out. Haven't had a pizza as good as "make your own pizza night" on thursdays. Were can I get a good Coconut crab dinner in the states?

Was on the Rock in 1990-1991 for operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. We had better tents though. We had EXPs not the old army tents like that. But I do so loved the island mostly the Brit Club. the male to female ratio was bad also. hope it was better for you.

Nice site!!! Was there with Lockheed-Martin at the USAF Satellite Tracking Station from '94 to '96. Surfing the web to see if everything is O.K. there after the tsunami.. OUTSTANDING pics!!

YOUR PICTURE OF THE HABOR IS JUST ABOUT THE SAME FROM WHEN I WAS STATIONED AT DIEGO GARCIA. SERVED THERE FROM FEB. 1972 TO SEPT. 1972 WITH THE NAV CHAP SEA BEES. WE WHERE ONE OF THE FIRST THERE TO HELP BRING SUPPLIES IN FROM THE LARGER SHIPS IN THE LAGOON. MY JOB WAS TO PILOT THE MIKE BOATS AND OFF LOAD CARGO. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SOME REAL GOOD PICTURES, AND SEE HOW MUCH NICER IT IS NOW.

Pretty good camera work. Much better than I did when I was there. I was there some 20 years ago as a Lockheed tech rep on the P3's in WC 610 of AIMD. I put up the antenna, which is probably still outside the amateur radio station, in 1984. My tour was for 13 loooong months. How did you miss Cannon Point in your photos? Is it still there? Do they still do r/r to the french plantation? We had some good parties and sailing in the bay. Regards, Jim
