I thought this looked like a pileated woodpecker. Is it that large? Thanks so much for your website, I love it. For your informatiion an National Eagle Center has just opened in Wabasha, Minnesota at 152 Main Street, right on the Mississippi River - well worth the trip to see it. They have 3 large Eagles that you can stand in the same room with, both have been injured when they were younger and will never be set free. It is a very exciting and great place - we stayed for a long time. Admission is $4.00 - quite a bargain for what you get to see. They also bring them into a classroom like place and you get to see them eat. Rosemary Market - Sidney, Ohio

Poor thing! It is a nice photograph though, the colors stand out nicely against the snow...

Such a beautiful bird. Winter is hard for sure.

Somehow the colors don't seem as bright as they would if it were upright.

I was hoping this thumbnail was'nt what I thought it might be, but alas, it is. Poor bird! But mother nature is neigher cruel nor kind. Life seems to go on on her terms and it seems to have worked well for eons. Thanks for sharing.
