cold tolerence*

I was terribly underdressed that day. It was bitterly cold and windy. This photo was taken by someone you might describe as insane – a young German guy who came to ride his bicycle across the lake. The lake is a mile deep, so it doesn’t completely freeze over until late January, and he was waiting until it was safe. This guy was going to ride across the northern section of the frozen lake on a mountain bike with spikes on the tires, and sleep on the ice at night. No tent, only a thick mummy bag. He explained that it’s not worth carrying the weight because it only provides a couple of degrees of extra warmth. He also explained that the biggest risk, aside from disappearing into a crack in the ice, was of the moisture in his throat freezing as he slept, which he said had happened to him before. The day I explored the lakeshore with him, wondering whether I might actually be getting frostbite, he wore nothing but a fleece and gloves. Later in the day, as the light began to fade and the temperature dropped even further, he casually pulled out a thin hat and slipped it on.
