The 70-300 is ideal for many birding shots. The drawback with that lens I use is the lack of AF capability with teleconverter that I've otherwise since become reliant on. I've experimented with AF recently on the longer lens and it's no fun.

that's dedication to birding, makes my 70-300 lens a little pathetic
