Least Tern at San Carlos Bay: Bunche Beach Preserve
Fort Myers, Florida USA
I read in the July/August 2009 edition of Audubon magazine that as a result
of the Endangered Species Act, the California population of the Least Tern has improved
from 225 breeding pairs in 1970 (nearly as many as were counted at Florida's Lovers Key
State Park in 2008), to several thousand pairs in 2009. I observed the terns at
Bunche Beach Preserve dive bomb a Great Blue Heron several times.
As was an extremely rare event, they left me alone.
