My great great great great grandfather Thomas Ely of Buford's command died in 1782 from complications of bayonet wounds in this battle. With a wounded son beside him he feigned death and was approached by a British soldier who cried out that he lived and asked him why he was there. Thomas replied his children were born here and that he had the right to be there and the soldier stabbed him with the bayonet. Earlier in another battle another son had also been killed.
